The Djaalinj Waakinj cohort study, conducted in the Perth South Metropolitan region of Western Australia, recruited 125 Aboriginal infants aged 0-12 weeks between the years 2017 and 2020. Tympanometry at 2, 6, and 12 months was used to assess the proportion of children with otitis media (OM), with a type B tympanogram signifying middle ear effusion. Potential risk factors were assessed via logistic regression, incorporating generalized estimating equations.
A significant proportion of children (35%, 29/83) presented with OM at the age of two months. This figure rose to 49% (34/70) at six months and persisted at 49% (33/68) at twelve months. Of those with otitis media (OM) at ages 2 and/or 6 months, a substantial 70% (16 out of 23) demonstrated OM at 12 months. However, only 20% (3 out of 15) of those without prior OM experienced the condition at 12 months. The relative risk of exhibiting OM at 12 months for those with prior OM is 348, with a 95% confidence interval of 122 to 401.
