Drought-induced stress in plants frequently causes the inactivation of numerous enzymes, primarily due to zinc deficiency. Using a greenhouse setup, this study investigated the effects of zinc (Zn) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on plant characteristics, yield attributes, relative water content (RWC), harvest index (HI), photosynthetic activity, solute accumulation, glycine betaine (GB) accumulation, antioxidant activities (catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)), and ionic composition in a drought-stressed SST806 bread wheat cultivar. Zn application, AMF inoculation, and their combined use, each individually and collectively, led to improved plant growth parameters and yields. Root dry weight (RDW) was observed to increase by 25%, 30%, and 46% in the three treatments under drought stress compared to the control. Drought-resistant characteristics, such as protein content, relative water content, and harvest index, were enhanced by using zinc applications, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi inoculations, or a combined approach. AMF inoculation, operating under the same conditions as zinc application, produced a more substantial upsurge in proline levels.
